Dovecote is one of our newest waters in recent years, and is a similar size to Disley Dam, the water depth varies from 3 to 8 feet.
The site is located on the left hand side of Station Road going towards Strines Station and is
characterised by a large beautiful Victorian Dovecote, which is located on a single central island in the middle of what was once
an ornamental lake of the Strines Printworks.
The Dovecote is Grade II listed, and was repaired and restored as part of the land donated
by the Harrow Estates to the Strines Recreation Ground Charity, in 2007.
The charity was formed to improve the conditions of life for
inhabitants of Strines and the surrounding neigbourhood, by the provision and maintenance of a recreation ground.
The 2 Millponds were stocked for fishing by day tickets to help raise funds for the charity, with a long term view to developing the Millponds and surrounding woodland for
the benefit of the local area. Day tickets currently cost around £3.50, and there is strictly no night fishing allowed.
Directions:
The direction to this site by road is the same as that described for our Strines section of the River Goyt.
Entrance to the water is through a gate which is locked, the lock is opened by the combination number contained
in your membership book. The site is still open for non-members at the charge of £5.00 a day.
Parking:
Parking is after the bridge on the left, on the cobbled area. Recently, the area surrounding the lake has been converted to a footpath, with a low-level fence, therfore
it's no longer possible to park right up to the wall. There may still be room to park near here, but please be careful when you park on the road that you leave enough room for
heavy lorries and tractors to pass.
Strines River:
We have also obtained the rights to the section of River Goyt flowing from the Strines bridge towards Marple for about half a mile.
This stretch of water seems to me not for the faint hearted as it isolated, requiring care and planning initially. Entrance
is from the New Mills side of the bridge, which you need to walk under and then wade down the river. Entrance from the banks
for the first 400 yards is not possible because it is walled to a height of fifteen to twenty feet but the river is accessible
from the bank on the right hand side after 400 yards. There is a footpath along here but I suggest careful reconnaissance before
you go with your tackle. You would be advised to make yourself familiar with this side as it appears as the other side is being
prepared for houses. There is a bend in the river after about 450 yards where the water
seems deep and promising, particularly for fly-fishing.Parking is the same as for Dovecotes

The waste bins are in the process of being removed and the onus is on the angler to take his/her waste home.
