I had a meeting on the 10 June 2010 with representatives of the Environmental Agency and The Wild Fowl Trust. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the planning of works on the River Goyt which is well underway. We already have the money for this project which has been carried forward from the original application in 2008.
The plan is for the works to commence on the 6th September 2010 and to involve the DNMAC in providing "hands on" assistance
The scope of this work is as follows:-
(a)A further 10 tree kickers(name for a type of large woody debris) istalled in 2008
(b) Twenty smaller mid-streeam flow deflector structures( another type of large woody debris)
(c) Bank revetment works(reinforcement) using logs and brushwood (at Upper Waterside Farm near the overhead cables at the corner of Knathole Wood)
Why September ? Because tree work around rivers have to be carried out when birds aren't nesting and fish aren't spawning, which leaves us with January, February and September and river levels are usually high in January and February.
Which Trees? Not dead or ivy clad trees(may contain bat-roostings);where possible sycamore will be selected (non-native) or Willow (which will regrow)and not trees greater than 45 cm diameter (limited by chain saw length). An Environmental Agency biodiversity officer will be on site when the trees are selected. Following the meeting we already have a rough idea which trees will be selected
Where will materials be sourced? Tree kickers will be felled on site. If possible flow detectors, logs and brushwood will also be sourced on site but we are also on the lookout for logs which are 30-50 centimeteres in diameter and 1 to 2 metres long. I propose to ask Derbyshire C.C./New Mills T.C. to reserve any they may have; the E.A. Ops Delivery people wll also be asked.
What equipment is needed? W.T.T have chainsaws,a winch, auger and a trailer donated by Japanese Knot Weed Solutions.
Who will do the work? Tree felling will be done by the WTT chainsaw trained staff. A small number of volunteers may be need for installing the tree kickers and a volunteer workforce wll be needed to prepare and install flow deflectors and bank revetment work.
?ON 25th June 2010, the EA granted us the required Land Drainage Consent for the work to go ahead
